Electric Distribution Mechanic – Van Nuys District
I’ve been with the Department of Water and Power for 12 years. Before getting hired, I spent my time avoiding responsibility and generally wasting my time “having fun”. By the time I was two years into the apprenticeship, I was in danger of failing out because of my poor performance. I finally had to realize that my drinking was out of control and I was about to drink away another opportunity at a decent life. After blaming everyone else for all my problems for years, I took some responsibility for my own actions. I surrendered to the fact that I was an alcoholic and could not stop drinking on my own. No matter how much will power I threw at the problem. I got the help I needed and started on a lifetime journey of recovery. This was ten years ago. I have stayed sober and advanced my career here at the LADWP. I just had to take the first step and admit I needed help. The resources are out there…. If you’re willing.
